Here's a working version of android-wifi-tether for the Samsung Moment. This should be considered a developer-only testing version, only for those who are interested in finding bugs and won't get mad when everything goes terribly wrong.

You'll need at least kernel version ZE07 for this to work properly.

EDIT:

There is a known issue with tethering such that sustained internet activity causes the CDMA radio to become unresponsive, preventing access to all phone-related functionality, including all voice and data traffic. To make it work again, you need to reboot your phone.

In other words, wifi tethering is not ready for anything but testing and debugging. If you'd like to help us solve this problem, that's what this forum is here for.

wow it works. so awesome... it might not be the fastest thing in the world but considering you dont need any drivers at all on the guest machine that is simply amazing. i remember reading someone ranting on this forum about why is root and wifi tether a big deal and to me i dont think i will ever get over the fact how cool this is... next time a customer has no internet and i need to download a driver i cant wait to bust out my phone and say "check this out" ....lol. the "oooohs" and "aaaahs" i am going to get is going to be fun.

great work and happy new year

on a side note using the Z07 i have had a few problems with freezing when using GPS/google maps. Airplane mode also enabled once for the first time ever but after a restart all was good.

So if your not prepared for some side effects dont flash because there is no room for complainers here !   =)

That's right. Stable this isn't.

I've been testing with ZE07-dev4. Note that this dev kernel has a lot more changes than just the wifi tethering stuff, a lot of which is "try it and see what happens" changes to core functionality to try to improve performance, but which so far don't seem to have improved much of anything and will probably not appear in a "stable" release.

Wifi tethering works! Unfortunately not for long Sad

I have had to pull the battery three times in my tethering tests because the radio seems to lock up completely. Turning off tethering does not bring it back, data and calls are both down at this time until the reset.

I am using CL14's modem if that makes a difference.

Tethering aside the new kernel release seems to work just fine, not sure if its a modem issue, kernel issue, or app issue.

This happened to me with PDAnet actually, the CDMA locks up and needs a reboot. I guess we have to wait for a more stable modem.bin...

The problem is indeed the CL14 modem... I flashed back to the stock kernel and modem, reflashed ZE07 and now Tethering works 100% and seems to be stable. In fact I'm on it right now... Smiley

Guess the new modem isn't up to speed Sad. Should probably release a stock modem tar alone, minus the stock kernel, so people can flash back to it as easily as possible Tongue, maybe pull the CL14 modem files as well now that we know there are hiccups with it.

Also for anyone interested I used a CNET Bandwidth test and got 412.3 kbps on the EVDO network with 5 bars out of 6. Not bad honestly... maybe not the greatest for large downloads but plenty fast for web pages and just about anything else. Good work with the tether app!!

Edit: I did the speed test quick with my cable modem connection which is suppose to be 5mb and got 1755.6 Kbps just for comparison.

ALSO I don't have my laptop available so I used a Belkin USB Wireless adapter on my desktop so that could have caused a difference in speed.

it'll lock up in CJ05 too. I had the PDANet problems before CL14 even came out. Give it time.

Hmm really? I've been using it pretty solidly for about a half hour or so without problems.

Sorry to hear that it will inevitably still freeze but hey it works better then CL14.

Yeah I'm in no rush for tethering to be completely stable, I think its very neat but in nearly every situation where I would need internet, I have it, like I said its just neat stuff Tongue
