I'm wondering if it's possible to run Odin under wine.  I found this link about running some other Samsung app under wine: http://www.samsung-eternity.com/index.php/topic,4696.msg35725.html
I tried following the instructions (didn't need to recompile kernel since it seems to already support it)

When I connect the phone, I see in dmesg that it recognizes the ACM device, and /dev/ttyACM0 is created.  I have added the symbolic link that is mentioned in the linked thread.
ln -s /dev/ttyACM0 ~/.wine/dosdevices/com1

But when I load Odin, I still don't see any device.  Any ideas?

Odin might not be using just the serial profile -- try getting ODIN to see the USB device itself.. this might require visualization w/ USB pass-through. I think Virtualbox supports USB pass-through on Linux, though I've never tried it.

Yes, the closed source version of VirtualBox supports USB.  I tried running Windows under VirtualBox but could not get Odin to see the phone that way either.  I'm wondering now if maybe the USB device is not configured 100% correct in the host OS.  I'd really hate to have to set up a whole dual boot just for this one program.

Gonna see if I can get this working. I have vmware workstation and wine running on my karmic box and all of the sdk's goin will see what I can come up with, cross platform setups is a big part of my day to day job so I will tackle this as best I can. will keep notes on my progress and if I get it working will give you the steps I took.

After I realized that Samsung new PC studio was required for it's USB drivers (even on a native windows box), I was able to get Odin to recgonize the phone from Windows XP in Virtualbox.  I haven't try a reflash from VirtualBox yet, but pretty sure it will work since it's detecting it now.

Still not sure if Wine is possible.  I've been told that wine doesn't handle USB drivers, except for the few builtin ones.

That's good to know, because my xp boot is REALLY slow, ill just install a virtual one.

Do I still need the closed source one, peeps?

Yeah, pretty sure you gotta have the closed source edition for any USB support.

Well, I tried actually flashing from VirtualBox today, and even though it detects it, it didn't seem to be able to send the data over.  Not sure what's up.  I'm just gonna set up a dual boot now.
