Not everyone is so rich they can afford to pay for their phone internet and 60 a month or in my case where i live, far more for satilite, so they can use windows update to get the drivers.

Dont be so snobish, I'm going to be a vast majority of us here use our phone as our only internet connection.
So how am I supposed to "windows Update" when i'm in download mode!?

darn, sorry to be rude dude, but this is being asked in other forums.

If anyone wants the easy street though, the drivers are in New PC Studio.

I just linked them in the other thread though in a zip file.
Its just the driver's outa the system32/drivers folder. You'll have to manually install them.

You do realize people trying to cheat the system and use their phones as their primary and only source of internet is the reason why they are becoming mroe and more strict on limiting the avalibility of tethering and why they implement these bandwidth caps? Sorry if i am not very excited about the prospect of assisting in the reason why sprint and all carriers are becoming more and more strict with avalibility of access...
Most people i know that are looking for wifi tether and usb tether is for remote access for short periods of time.. not to permanently run as their only source of internet

I'm still having trouble getting WinXP to recognize the phone when in download mode. It keeps saying it can;t install the drivers. I've pointed it to the Samsung drivers that Zefie has on his download site, and then I ran the setup in the drivers and it installed something to my Program Files folder...I pointed WinXP to that folder and it still can't see the phone in download mode. Regular file transfer mode works fine. Tried with debugging checked and unchecked (on the phone).

Do I need to have New PC Studio installed?
Thx

Same problems for me.  I'm using Windows XP.  The new hardware wizard comes up when the phone is connected in download mode.  It doesn't find drivers via windows update, and pointing to the drivers listed in this thread does not work either.  I've even tried manually installing the driver but it says the driver doesn't contain any information for the hardware.  Are there some different drivers to use?

Otherwise I'll try it on Windows 7 when I get home.

Yes.. there is a specific serial driver that is needed for download mode that the phone never needs/uses in normal mode.. This is the driver that New PC studio (or whatever it is called) contains and it is avalible via windows updater if you automatically search for the driver in windows 7 (worked on all 3 of my windows 7 machines)

Install PC Studio. I did that and my XP machine installed the drivers and flashed perfectly.

Ditto that suggestion....

Also, make sure PC Studio IS NOT running in the "background" when you do the install through Odin. I was freezing up @ 'Setup Connection' until I disabled PC Studio.

PC Studio i believe contains the correct driver.. but you cant have it running in the background when you try to flash... Windows foudn the drivers on the update server for me on windows 7

Okay, installing New PC Studio (looks like a bloated application for simply transferring data to/from a phone) did the trick. Installed and rebooted the computer, plugged in the phone and ODIN saw the phone. Flashing ZE08 was pretty painless after that.
I'll be following the updates...thanks for this tutorial and all the work everyone's done. I wish I could help contribute.

What version of PC Studio do you guys recommend?  I have an older one (3.2?) and the newest (7.4?)

Also... is z08 stable enough for me to install?

Can someone please post a link to one of the following:
Windows XP 32-bit driver
Windows 7 64-bit driver
Newest version of PC studio that has the drivers for either of the above.
(I'm referring to the driver needed to load this kernel)

Please, and thank you.

no offense, but tough cookies for sprint and other carriers who are trying (but failing) to limit how we can use our phones. why the hell should be pay twice for the same connection? seriously, they are more concerned about their profits then worrying if some few people have found out how to use their phone as a modem.

I use WinXP and could not get ODIN to see my phone either. I had installed PCStudio, and made sure it was turned off. Then I tried setting up ODIN all they way, with all the little boxes checked, etc. With that done, I fired up the phone in Download mode, and AS SOON as the display came up with the blue SD card, I plugged in the USB cable. Presto! The USB drivers self-installed, and ODIN recognized the phone. I pressed start, and off ODIN went. I know others have said to wait for a while to plug in the USB cable, but that never worked for me. YMMV.

Thanks for the easy instructions. Every thing went great super smooth. Is it just me or does 08 improve reception?  (Probably just me). Thanks to everyone who has been working their tail off getting this to work.  If there is anything I can do to help (within my limited skill set) let me know.

Edit. Tried rm'ing Sprint apps after upgrading to 08 kernel couldn't get to test mode just recovery mode.  Did it anyway and it wouldn't boot up, just kept going to recover mode.  Had to reload 05 and then tm and load 08.  Not sure what I did wrong other than trying it in recovery mode.
I have noticed the battery seems to last longer at least by the battery indicator.
