Hi,

The phone is not the problem here. It's windows. I had a similar issue happen to me right now. I had to do some digging and that's when I found your post. I have managed to resolve it though.

My issue and solution:
Windows Vista Ultimate 32, when I first connected my device while under download mode, Vista downloaded the correct drivers, but the rooting process was hanging at setup connection and though I closed Odin many times it did not seem to help. So I disconnected my phone and plugged it back in and suddenly Vista said it did not recognize the device and download a new set of drivers. They new ones were generic drivers that now stated "unknown device". I tried pointing to the correct ones, but nothing.

Finally I decided to do a system restore to right before Windows downloaded the bad drivers. My system rebooted. I connected the phone in download mode and this time Vista downloaded the correct drivers. It resolved half my problem. I managed to get through the hanging issue by removing the battery from the phone. Putting it into download mode and very quick connecting to my system, and opened Odin.

P.S. Not a politician by trade, but by design for "humans are political animals by nature" Plato

Thanks you Dale for helping me... It rooted fine on a newer computer.

Question... If I want to run SDK to remove stock apps, does the phone first have to be turned off?  Debugging must be enabled... correct?

Thanks.

when you are trying to remove apps you need to be in recovery mode.
there is a good tutorial here and here.

Did OP solve this issue? I'm having the same problem with my computer not recognizing my phone
in download mode. I'm using windows xp sp3 (black edition if it makes a difference). I also dont know off the top of my head if I have usb 2.0 (posting from my moment). I have pc studio installed but bor running, and when I plug in the phone it seems to recognize it at first but then says there's a problem with the device. Tried all 6 of my usb ports and they all do the same thing. I can access the sd card in
xp/mac osx no problem.

Also I can't use bootcamp since my mac is a powerbook g4. Any way to flash using ubuntu? I found a ubuntu distro for powerpc, and was thinking I could install WINE to run odin, but idk if the drivers will work.

I will award 2 free interwebs to anyone who can solve this mystery. Or if you're in the northern virginia area and can do it for me I'll buy you lunch or something in return.

My problem was solved.  I do not have USB 2.0 so I used another computer.  Do you have an older machine?

I had the same problems. Managed to pull out most of my hair trying to figure it out. What was so frustrating for me was it would recognize the phone until it went into download mode and then nothing. Now I'm not a real technical person, but in my laypersons terms, what I did eventually was to complete ALL of the windows updates. There were many. My computer is older (apparently) and running Vista. Once I completed the Windows updates (took over an hour for them all to install etc), it worked just like magic. Or just like it should. I had a problem yesterday very similar on the same cpu, after flashing multiple times. All of a sudden it's not going to recognize the phone?Huh?? So I restarted everything and it was fine. I'm now paying more attention to the Windows update notifications.
