Getting ready to root....

Hi, I've had my Moment for 2 weeks so far and love it. I found this site and read about the custom firmwares that allow wifi-tether and install apps to SD. I'm quite experienced at installing custom firmwares so I should be good on that end. My phone came with the CL14 update so I'm aware I need to downgrade and then use the patchoob kernels. I do have a few questions before I dive in though.

1. Is there a way to backup my phone (contacts,text convos, apps, settings, etc) without the custom firmware?

I remember reading someone used an app to do this, but I can't seem to find it again.

2. Other than the three features I mentioned above, what other things does the custom firmware let me do?

Flashing a custom kernel does not effect your data portion of the filesystem. Once you have the custom kernel there is the datatool that will backup your entire data portion in one file. Only takes 1 button to restore. Very useful.
