Title: Hack the moment
Post by: hokansoc on November 06, 2009, 05:57:13 PM
Hey, I just got the moment, and i'm trying to get root access on it. Made some progress so far, you can see the screenshots and chat logs on http://sites.google.com/site/hackthemoment/ (http://sites.google.com/site/hackthemoment/)

If anyone comes up with a good idea, let me know.

Hey hokansoc,

A lot of us are definitely interested in obtaining root on the Moment so we can start actually bringing out the phone's full potential. Make sure and keep us updated on any progress you might have.

Will it be a combination of key presses most likely that will get it into root mode?  I ported my number by myself with the tech support line and they gave me an access code that was ##4 numbers or so#, and I gained access to some type of management menu, but I pulled a total boner move and didnt write the number down or look too closesly at the screen, and the number wasnt saved in my redial list, the menue was accessed vial the dialpad.  Is this something that may be useful, or not something that involves rooting?  I know what to say to get the number from tech support again if I need to.

that number in the middle was your MSL its unique for every CDMA cell phone. its for activating your phone.  CS will usually have no problem giving it to you. Its something that you would like to have, but has nothing to do with rooting the phone.

Not to mention the one that they gave you was a "one-time only" MSL...  so it wouldn't work again anyways. It takes an "oops" on sprint's part for them to give you the true MSL that always works. Or working for sprint (which i do)

hmmm mine was always the same..altho when mine was initially activated it was at the sprint store. you can also get it by taking your number off the phone and putting it back on threw the online activtor.

Small stores will often give you the real one just to be helpful. Over the phone customer support won't. (technically the small stores aren't supposed to either.... we just do anyways)

I always get the msl for my phones from the online activation.  They give you the one time code, but they also give you a secondary code in case you have problems.  The secondary code is the actual msl for the phone.

oh nice :) i didn't realize they showed you the secondary codes.

I am super interested in rooting the moment.   Hopefully it will be rooted in the next month or so.

Hi. Noob here. I want to root the moment too, but I'd be a tester more than a hacker. ;)

Wanted to say I fully support the rooting process, and while I may not have the skills to make it happen, I will support and forum members or projects who do. I have some light programming skills, and am willing to be a tester.

Also, if someone starts a donation pot for the first to root, I would be first in line to toss in a few dollars.

Not sure if you all found this screen yet. ShutDown the moment. Power up with the all three buttons depressed (Start Call, Optical Touchpad, and End Call) This gave me a Self Test screen with about 21 options on it.

Keypad all the way to firmware update....

I really hope this helps!!!

The interesting thing about that test menu is that it calls the moment the "instinctQ".  Lol. Maybe its an instinct after all.

I agree. I bet Sprint was wanting a new refreshing name. Like if we make them wait a "moment" before we release any firmware then hero owners will not all jump ship...

I tried the firmware update it replied it was a success.. lol If only it had done anything.... Well until we have an firmware image we might be waiting a bit. Can anyone see if the phone is hooked up via usb to Linux what it is trying to grab?

Sorry for the PUN.

It's not a true FW update... It's a "touch fw" update. Meaning it will update the software that runs the touchscreen. Potentially useful.. but not for hacking. :'(

I dont have a moment yet, but I am getting one soon and am interested in getting root as well. I saw that there is a firmware dump avalible. Im downloading it now, and will take a look to see if I can make any sense of it (im not a programer so it will probably all look like garbage, but who knows.) there has to be a loophole to get root on this phone. If any programers out there can make sense of it maybe we will find our path to root.

After I posted I watched a video about the moment. In the video it was mentioned that updates will be a file to be applied to the moment from a pc. I have a feeling that this may be our path to root on the moment if nothing is figured out before then. I was looking at the files contained in the software dump but im not sure how to open most of them. I need to do some looking around to figure it out.I will learn something. Even if its not how to root the moment, lol.

I saw someone posted about the "##" number they were told by tech support to dial -- I'm assuming this is ##33284# (##DEBUG#). It should then prompt you for the MSL#. (I haven't gone farther than that because I haven't bothered to get my MSL yet)

##DEBUG# is a common key sequence that's worked on every Sprint phone I've had over the last 10 years. Some phones give you more information and options than others, obviously, but I'm sure there's some good info that may assist in rooting to be accessed through this menu. (I'm also sure that those that are making serious progress in rooting the Moment already know about this menu, but I felt I should post it anyways for those that want to dig around.)

i didn't notice anything all that helpful in there...  i'm not a programmer, but nothing really jumped out at me other than "Korea Mode"...  everything else in that menu has something selected except "Korea Mode". if you click "Korea Mode" it has (all unselected) options of "Korea Mode", "Sprint Mode", or "Mode Off". what would that be for?

maybe someone more linux savvy can check into this.

a search on our kernel version 2.6.27 thats on the moment brings up a website with a program for a local root vulnerability.

http://www.milw0rm.com/exploits/9545 (http://www.milw0rm.com/exploits/9545)

not sure if it can be compiled for android... Just trying to help

maybe this will help looks good but we shall see I guess

please DO NOT double or quadruple post in the future.
thanks - the mods

I believe that's the one that the hero exploit is based on... and the moment is patched to where that doesn't work. :(

I was hoping someone could tell me if i can use it to restore my phone. using the sd card.

Ah... yeah. You can't put that on your phone. Not yet at least. Once we root it maybe, but not yet.

while trying to get the app "Bluetooth File Transfer" to work i stumbled upon a way to at least see the system files. if you open this app with bluetooth turned off it will ask to turn on bluetooth (doing so crashes the app). hitting cancel allows you to navigate through the files. im not sure if you can edit anything in the system files. however you can copy files from to the sd card and at least see what's there.

Something interresting in the App settings under the dev option on the phone i wanted to see what would happen if i enabled the USB debuging on the phone.  either i dont have the drivers or the option dont work when i plug the phone into my computer.

most people are able to connect with the usb debugging turned off.  if you are having issues with mounting the phone to the computer, this http://www.samsungmomentforum.com/general-samsung-moment-discussion/usb-mounting-issue/ (http://www.samsungmomentforum.com/general-samsung-moment-discussion/usb-mounting-issue/) may help you resolve your issue.

i can mount it just fine with the debugging off but im wondering if the debugging has something to do with getting root on the phone.

Nope. Just with debugging programs and using ADB. (which i suppose might be helpful in the future, but atm it's useless for rooting).   :(

lame! i have been drooling on my moment for some time now i would love to got some custom UIs put on it.  I ghave been a computer geek/tech/nerd my whole life this is my frist pda/smart phone and its a whole new area for me.  So i would have now idea where to even start looking for root on the phone. but more then happy to test.
