go to mail.google.com, then go to contacts. It should give you the option to "find duplicate contacts'

I think I know what you're talking about.  If you open a contact on the phone it looks like there are two or three complete sets of info in there.  That happens because you have more than one contact for the same person in your web Gmail contacts.  I had the same problem and couldn't figure out why at first.

An example: Most global companies now have a US in front of their domain in their email address, like us.company.com.  If you send email to company.com it will most likely still go through.  If you get email from someone at the company it will most likely include the US in the address.  So if you have your Gmail settings a certain way, Gmail will save every address you send mail to or receive mail from.  So that person will actually have two entries in your contacts; one with each version of the address.  Now, when you sync your contacts to your phone, the phone's contacts app consolidates the entries with the same name so you don't have multiple entries show up in the list.  You might have a first set of info with the persons name, phone number and email address, then a second set with just a different email address, and maybe even a third with a home email address.  Three sets of information all under the same contact name.

The way to fix this is to add the information from the info sets that come after the first one into the first info set.  After you do that, delete the address or whatever from the additional info set.  Your second or third info set should not have anything in any of the info fields.  After you do that to all of your contacts, exit the contacts app, and then open it again.  If you check your contacts now you should only see one set of info fields with the information in them.

Sorry this was so long.  It's one of those things that takes a long time to explain.  I hope this helps you.
