What are the odds?  I know nothing of android or android development, just looking for help picking between the moment and the hero.

Not happening. On the other hand, what is it you like about sense?

I have a feeling that you're about to tell me everything I want can be accomplished with third party apps.  Which would make my day.  From what I've seen of it, it seems very much like the home screen (desktop?) is very much touchflo on android, which I think would ease the transition for me from WinMo.  I also like the home screen widgets which remind me of palm pre cards.  I definitely find the general UI to be more functional than stock android, shown http://www.viddler.com/explore/engadget/videos/499/.

I have never used the Hero or the senseUI (I knew I wanted a hardware keyboard from the beginning) , but from talking to Hero owners on IRC, they see the senseUI as a disadvantage to their phone.  That being said, I have also heard that the Hero's virtual keyboard is better than the stock android.  you can decide whether you like the on-screen keyboard better or not.

You can also get all sorts of widgets and desktop replacements and skins from the market.  I bet if everyone here who has had their phone for more than a week posted a picture of their homescreen, there would be no 2 alike.

Well there probably would be bc a lot of people here just barely got their phones. However, he is correct as far as the possibilities go. The best parts of sense are
  • widgets
  • desktop changes
  • virtual keyboard

And yes, i am going to tell you that all of those are possible to set us as YOU want, not as HTC wants, with custom applications.

Widgets:

There are tons of widgets for clocks / weather / etc etc etc on the market. If you can dream it up, it probably exists, and if not, it probably will soon.

Desktop Customization:

There are many different programs for customizing your desktop (including adding the extra screens to go from 3 to [however many you need])
check out: http://www.samsungmomentforum.com/apps-apps-apps/home-replacement-apps/ for a bunch of reviews of different ones, and http://www.samsungmomentforum.com/how-to/getting-started-aka-'hitchhikers-guide-to-the-android'/ for a guide that goes over a bunch of things (including how to set up PandaHome, my desktop replacement of choice).

Virtual Keyboard:

Yes.... the virtual keyboard of the HTC Hero rocks. It's really quite amazing. Lucky for us, we can put it on the moment as well.

My opinion:   Yes... sense is decent for a right out of the box setup of a phone. However, with a little work, you can get the moment to run however you want it, without the added bloatware of sense.

I know one thing I wish the Moment had was screen multi-touch.  Too bad you can't use 2 fingers to pinch/expand so you can zoom-in/zoom-out on pictures and websites.

I got the Moment though because it has the faster 800 Mhz processor and hope to see other features added with the new Android versions that will come down the road.

Yes, Beautiful Widgets will be gone after HTC sent the dev a cease and desist order.  So if you have them, back them up, and if you don't have them they're worth the small investment to buy and back up for later use.  I just checked and as of now, they are still in the market.

Grrrr... It's already pulled from the Market!  I didn't know about the C&D so I went to see if there were any updates and I can't find it anymore.  Cry

Speaking of 2.0, what are the odds that we get custom ROMs?  I've read through the rooting forum but it was all over my head...

well they already exist on a minor scale. So far all anyone has really done is change the image that shows up while booting. however, this proves that it is possible, and custom roms should be forthcoming.

These are back on the market, just changed up a bit. I think Sense is a good idea overall... I own a Touch pro 2, touch pro, Mogul [titan], Moment and a hero.  I like HTC Devices... Moment has a keyboard though. Sense it easy, 5 desktops rock.  Sense has easy ways into most things, and as for the moment, some of the best android desktops require 1.6 or above...
