cool........I think I'll try it out over the weekend now that the semester is over, and before i go back to classes in the summer......anyway....

for those of you that have already done it, is there a way to unpartition your sd card after you do this process?

also, do you notice any lag when running apps from sd card?

I have a class 6 8gb.....

thanks

I'd love to be able to run apps from the SD card, I'm just worried about the speed from using a 32gb Class 2 card.  I assume running apps from the card will keep the phone from getting cluttered and running slower?  I noticed for a while that I had a ton of stuff on the actual phone, enough to give me a warning, and it was SLOW to every single finger touch.

Rooting...that's a road I haven't crossed yet.  I found your thread on a custom ROM, but I think there are things on there that I'd still never use...I just wanna get rid of stupid apps that keep trying to run in the background w/o me even starting them...nfl, sprint tv, etc.

That bad ehh Wink  Oh well, it was $11 shipped.

I'm reading another thread on SDX about how someone mentioned running apps from an SD w/o the need to root...I think.  I'm still a green pea here, so which way is "better", ie is there a pro or con vs the different ways to try and run apps from the SD?  I'm a simple user...streaming music, play games, etc but I'd like to keep the phone running as fast as possible.

james, in my humble opinion....i think root is so easy to achieve that there is really no need to compare between the two......again this is just my opinion......i mean it usually takes around 5 minutes to root.......but oh well......

btw, i got my sd card ....class 6 8gbs (transcend) for around 20 bucks from amazon i think........

i really dont think the whole apps2sd speeds up the phone much....if anything things could get slower with a bad card.....but dont quote me on that

@RedBullZ : we have the same card...i got mine from newegg though and i think maybe $17 but that was like over a year ago when i had my instinct

cool......actually before i got this one I had a sandisk class 4 8gbs and I had alot of problems (card would randomly be corrupted and stuff like that)

yea I mean I would think that apps would run slower from the Sdcard.....but I am running out of space.....somewhat.....

and I've also been having problems where space randomly starts to disappear......i've cleared caches, uninstalled apps.....and the size continues to go down......i've recently wiped and restored my data and it seems to be normal again.....we'll see later if I have the same problem......

so yourmom1 my guess is that you won't be trying apps2sd....

I dont expect running apps from the SD will speed up the phone, I'm just hoping that it wouldn't slow the phone down either.  I imagine that if I load the phone itself w/ too many apps that it'll slow the phone down from decreased free memory, just like on a PC.  More (free) memory usually means a faster running computer for it to do it's thing.  I know with my Treo's that if I loaded it to the gills w/ apps that my streaming apps would be forced to buffer more.  Clear out some cache, delete old text messages, call history, etc and suddenly less buffering.  The 1st Moment I had got loaded up w/ lots of apps after I got a ton of free games from the guy at the Sprint store, and it definately made the phone react slower to inputs, rotating the screen, booting took longer, etc.  I'm on my 2nd Moment now (signal issues), and all those apps are on the card because I haven't installed them yet...and the phone is notably faster since I haven't used every single free byte of memory like I did before.

duuuuuuuuudeee jaja

i just this this apps2sd on my phone (it was not easy for me because there were no real instructions as to how to partition the sd card) and my phone now is SUPER SMOOTH

it actually runs much faster and much more smooth....i LOVE IT

EDIT 2: ok forget my old questions...i forgot to do a step...

would the battery life be impacted by this in any way?

3. is there any way to look at how much space i'm using in the new partition for the apps on my sd? I allotted 1gb for apps (i know it seems like alot but I don't really like to store alot of other crap on my sd, besides the evo has 1gb internal memory doesn't it?)  I would reaaaally like to see how much space i'm using on my sd partition....it's just the inner nerd....it doesn't show in the computer.....it just shows the regular fat32 part.....which is for all my documents and stuff....

EDIT 1:

well this is it for now.......hopefully somebody will be able to answer those questions.....

i'll report back when I have more time playing around with the phone.....but so far the first thing you notice is the smoothness........so anyway.....

undo the apps2sd by either flashing the phone back to stock (will wipe the apps you have on there) or by taking the time to copy them back to /data and then deleting the simlinks. Just to pre-empt the questions, no i don't know how to do that, and i'm not writing instructions.

Speeds:  internal memory right speeds test at about 4mb/s. This means that all your /system /cache and /data io must be less than 4mb/s, since they're all on the same chip. If you move your apps off of that chip to the sd card, a class 4 will at least keep up with the internal chip (and that's if the internal isn't doing anything except /data which is doubtful). A class 6 could be way faster than the internal in theory. A class 2 may technically be slower than the max speed for the internal memory, but depending on how much the internal memory is being accessed, it may give you a result that seems faster.

then this might explain why my phone seems faster and much smoother....

for example....if you have multiple widgets and apps running on a class 2 card, the phone might slow down, compared to a class 6 which is what I have and thus makes the apps run faster than on the internal memory....

i remember I tried apps2sd a while back with a weird sd card that I had (it said it was class 6 but it ran super slow....) and to undo it I just restored my latest backup....but I never did repartition the sd card...i have it somewhere laying around....so I think to undo the apps2sd the only way I know is to either reflash like hokansoc said or restore your latest backup before apps2sd.....

So getting a Class 4 SD is going to be the minimum then?  I've got 2 Class 2's, but I have yet to see how apps2sd works even though it's already preinstalled on the ROM that I'm running.
