So i am running the stock 2.1 right now. I haven't had a computer to be able to do any of the flashing with, so i have stuck with the stock. but i do want to get into the rooting of the phone and was wondering how i install it. I don't have a custom recovery installed, do i need to install one? also, when i hold down the call center and end call button during boot my phone locks up and won't enter into recovery mode. Anyone have any ideas what that could be all about?

call center and end call button

The 1st is a place you call when you have issues, and the 2nd is 1 of 3 buttons you need to push to get into recovery mode.   Huh

A panda walks into a restaurant and orders some food. When he finished eating he took out a gun, shot it into the air and started to leave. The owner of the restaurant runs after him and asks him what that was all about. The panda takes out a book and shows him the description for pandas. it says, "Pandas: Eats shoots and leaves."

So... thank you Mr punctuation Nazi for pointing out my flaw. What i meant was call, center, and end call buttons. Hope that appeases you sir Tongue

P.S. Thank god for spell checker.

The fact that you took the time to write all that in defense of your lack of punctuation in ONE sentence is laughable, but commendable.  I would hardly call myself a grammar Nazi, it's just called common sense.  I HATE when people screw up common mistakes and automatically throw out the Grammar Nazi card...unless you speak English as a second language, don't expect us to figure out what you meant to say.  The rest of your post had puncuation, so I didn't understand why the slip up in the most critical sentence.  Then again, had you read the post on the simplest step of all, this would be a moot point.

As I tell girls...don't expect me to read your mind or understand what the hell you meant to say..I'm a guy, so dont be lazy, be clear and there won't be any confusion.

I'm now appeased, but I'd like a cookie...white chocolate chip, please  Grin

De03 is the only version you should concern yourself with as it is the official release from Sprint. Apps2sd does absolutely nothing to speed up your phone...it just gives you more space for apps. Noobs rom is definately the fastest rom out. and if you couple it with Joeykrims custom kernel not only willl it be quicker it will also have better battery life than stock.

Newbie question here:

So I've got Noobnl's 1.2.3 ROM on my phone now, then I followed the link to Joey's custom kernal.  I clicked the first link he provides on the 1st step of his directions, which takes me a cool list of check options.  I'm assuming this site lets me check my options, then produces a custom made .zip file for me to install onto the phone.   After that it gets confusing.  After doing the 1st directions step, what are all the other step after that for?  WHAT IS IT WITH THIS SITE!!!!  I'm trying to highlight the step that I'm specifically referring to, but this darn window keeps jumping around?!  It does this on all 3 of my computers, regardless of me using IE or Avant browser.  WHY?!?!

Directions - Update.zip
Create the custom update.zip - http://www.joeyconway.com/sdx/custom/index.php
Check the joeykrim-SDX-kernel
Put the custom-SDX-update.zip onto the /sdcard
Boot recovery
Select Apply .zip and choose the custom-SDX-update.zip
Apply and reboot!

Directions - Sprint Update Tool
put the .tar file into the binary folder by itself. run sprint update tool.

Directions - Recovery Menu Flash Options
boot into recovery
make sure to mount sdcard to /sdcard
rename zImage-jk-2.0.3 to zImage put into /sdcard/updates (recovery 2.1.3) or /sdcard/sdx/updates (recovery 3.0+)
flash using the flash options in the menu for kernel

Directions - flash_image
boot into recovery
make sure to mount sdcard to /sdcard
adb shell
flash_image boot /sdcard/zImage-jk-2.0.3
if flash_image completes successfully, it worked!

Download Links
http://forum.sdx-developers.com/downloads/?sa=view;down=251 - zImage - v2.0.3
http://forum.sdx-developers.com/downloads/?sa=view;down=250 - .tar - v2.0.3
http://www.joeyconway.com/sdx/custom/index.php - update.zip - v2.0.3

Verify Install
Check in About Phone under Build Version - Should say joeykrim Final 2.0.3

Future Implementation List
zip installer - forcystos
update the changelog
continue kernel .config tweak
clean up init.rc
recompile modules with uClibc and optimize
add custom kernel version
install busybox to /bin
add /bin to path
add etc/passwd and etc/group to sdx.sh
setup sdx.sh to run on boot

the other steps are just other install options.  if you have the zip file (created from the options you chose on joey's custom builder pg) then just drop that onto your phone's SD card, boot into recovery and apply the zip. after that, you can confirm it's there under >about phone >build number

having said that, i have both joey's kernal and noob's rom, and _neither_ do a thing for battery life on my phone.  this morning i started with a full charge -- i've since listened to 20 min of music, browsed the market for 3 min and sent 4 texts -- and my battery is down a third as usual.  no difference at all from before.

i think joey and noob have created a cool thing, and it's neat that this phone can be customized by users. but at the end of the day, battery life sucks and neither of these solutions help. and that's on top of trying different combinations of advance task killer, overclock widget, auto memory manager, bluetooth switches, et al.  i even saw i thread over at the Sprint forum about bringing the phone in to have the antenna reseated -- which i did, and it was a complete waste of time.

so far, nothing i've tried makes any meaningful impact on battery life and i carry an external battery pack wherever i go just so i can be sure my "wireless" phone will have enough juice to make it through a day.  hopefully i never need this thing in a true emergency!

I see the Sprint Navigator missing after installing this.  I use this app as a backup GPS.  I have my old phone backed up but I cant find the apk file(s) for this to restore it.  Any hints?

Thanks for the hack! Grin  Works great!

Then again, had you read the post on the simplest step of all, this would be a moot point.

This is true. Now that i feel like a total id10t, lol, i will make sure from now on to read more thoroughly. I just remember being able to hold all three of the buttons and it would load stuff. but it was the wrong thing that was loading now that i think about it. and also, sometimes learning hurts, even if it's not physical pain, it still can be emotional. I thank you for calling me out and slapping me verbally across the face. V.V

Also, my original question wasn't answered. Maybe it has somewhere but i still am getting really frustrated. I have the stock DD03 update from sprint. When i copy the noobnl update and go to the recovery mode it loads the update.zip and then it fails to update. Do i need to load a custom recovery? or can i use the stock one? I have tried for the last half an hour or so to follow the directions as laid out before me by those much wiser then I. but i still seem to fail. Any help would be great. Thanks.

Yes you need a custom recovery, it took me a while to figure it out but the standard recovery doesn't read the custom files.

I've searched on here and found nothing...what is littlejith's kernal?  Also, I don't know what root7 is, so I'm guessing im fine w/o it.  Since this incorporates JoeyKrim's kernal is one shot (a road I've been scared to cross), can the opening screen, backgrounds, etc still be changed from all the choices on his website?

So, the good:  I have apps2sd in recovery mode, now i just need to read and understand all the stuff it takes to make it work.  Battery status is reading in incriments of 5 instead of 10, and the font looks slightly different.  Otherwise, it doesnt really seem to be an different so far...and i didnt have to reload all my apps, contacts, etc.  Always a plus with a mod Smiley

So, the bad:  After the installation and 1st reboot, everything started up fine, but for some reason it made the plug/unplug sound about 6-7 times, yet everything seemed fine.  Then i noticed that the battery wasnt charging, regardless of which charger i use.  I take blame because i hadnt cleared the Delvik cache, so i went back in to do that, then reinstalled the zip.  Its charging now, but even after sitting overnight for 7+hrs on the wall charger, the battery is only at 95%.  At this point, im worried about the affect this may have on my battery, phone or wall charger since its never stopped charger when it should have, so where is all the electricity going?

So the battery has finally been able to reach 100%, but it still does the occasionaly in/out battery charging before it finally settles down and charges like it should.  I've noticed that I've no longer got the option to mount my SD.  What do I do now?
